Dear parents/guardians;
We all have loved our nature walks and feeling dirt and crunchy leaves under our feet at WMAES! I would like to give our students a different homework opportunity-one where we can take a moment to soak in this extra special glowing fall season. For homework this week, please discuss positions for math (above, below, top, middle, bottom) while you do the following leaf activity.
Today we had an awesome character education bonfire with our high school buddies from Ms. Kotarski’s Spanish class-we will be meeting with them about once a month to practice the character traits as well as learn some Spanish. Today, the sun was shining through the maple forest fall leaves casting an amber glow on our students as we made a bonfire, roasted marshmallows and made some mores. We also collected bags of fall leaves to make a fun project for home work. It was a very special time much like our apple cider making last week where we celebrated our great behavior, but this time our students were able to share all they knew about responsibility with their high school buddies. What special memories we are making! I really am enamored with our class: how much they take care of each other, do their hardest work, and strive to do the right thing all of the time! They are scary smart too-they really are picking up on a lot of concepts that surprise me and I attribute all of that to your hard work at home with them-thank you thank you for all of your support!
For Homework (finally;)
Please glue the collected fall leaves onto paper to make a picture of an animal. You may have seen Mrs. Burns students lovely work on her wall. I thought this idea was too fun to pass up. You may add a few embellishments like pipe cleaners, drawing a face or parts of the animal, or googly eyes. You may use the back of this paper, other paper, or colored paper. Please have your child choose the animal they would like to create, write the kind of the animal for them and have them practice writing it and their name as well (carefully). Let me know if you have any questions. This is in place of a regular homework assignment. I look forward to seeing all of you for conferences next Thursday or the following Monday!
Sincerely,
Melissa Thompson

Our students earned all of their letters of a reward for displaying awesome respect and responsibility as a whole group. They earn letters like in hang man and when the word is done they have earned their reward! We made apple cider yesterday (each student helped crank two apples and we drank the cider), had extra recess, and will make apple tea light holders.

10-4 special events:
Thank you very much for helping your child with their homework (packet, reading logs, and sight word practice)! It is still looking good.
Monday: We are learning the letter "h". We are blending consonants with vowels to make short words like hat, help, hip, hot, hug. We also are painting sunsets over the prairie. Then adding harvested prairie flowers to the murals.
Tuesday: We are practicing reading centers, which takes a few rounds to nail down. During reading centers students rotate in groups this week doing: reading/phonics practice with me, placing magnet letters in alphabetical order, writing and phonics at their seats, and sequencing 4 story cards. They are working hard, cooperating, and quietly focusing on their task.
We also have a character ed assembly today. Our hero of respect this past month is Tyler! His name will be announced at our assembly and his photo will be taken and will be displayed in the office. Each month students will have this opportunity. Next month's character trait is responsibility-we are practicing listening the first time, doing tasks in a quick safe manner, and turning in all of our work. I thank you so very much for all of your help-homework and reading logs are looking great, also when we practice sight words at school students are reporting they are having fun practicing at home too!
Wednesday: We will be creating tissue paper apples (getting excited for the field trip)! Also we will be reviewing consonants and vowels and blending all that we have learned.
Thursday: We will be discussing Christopher Columbus, learning S, and will visit Ms. Holly/Mr. Shawn for environmental education class.
Friday: Field trip to Klackle Apple Orchard! We will leave school at 8:30, eat lunch there at 11:00, and leave the orchard at 12:00. Please remind your child of behavior expectations and to stay with their chaperon at all times. All students are to stay with our class while riding the bus to and from the orchard as we are responsible for them during school and on field trips. If you would like to check your child out of class early, you will need to do so in the office, as this is normal procedures. Thank you very much for the help of chaperons, we couldn't do this with out you! Also, thank you parents for helping provide this opportunity for your child-we will have fun exploring our apple orchard ecosystem in person!
We will not have time for show and tell today, we will resume show and tell next Friday.
**No school Monday- Professional Development for teachers** Christopher Columbus Day
9-27 special events:
Thank you very much for helping your child with their homework (packet, reading logs, and sight word practice)! Things are looking good.
Monday: Its a chilly, sunny beautiful day! We will visit the beach forest ecosystem as we learned the letter "b". We are blending consonants with vowels to make short words like bat, bed, bin, bot, bun. We also are going to make pumpkins out of apples (cut in half and used as stamps). We have been composting all of our fruit and vegetable waste (we will wipe the apples off and compost them today).
Tuesday: We will make popcorn apple blossoms and visit the gardens to count our vegetables.
Wednesday: Count day! If we can get a few more apples donated as well as tea lights we will make apple candle holders (students are not aware of this in case it doesn't happen). Other wise we will do a Johnny Apple seed project.
Thursday: We will visit Ms. Holly/Mr. Shawn for environmental education class-we sorted beans from dried pods that we harvested together last week
Friday: We will create an apple experiment: students have done research on apples, they will make a hypothesis, do the experiment as a class, observe it on Monday, and make a conclusion (while practicing this vocabulary). Don't forget Show and tell.
9-20 special events:
Thank you for your patience. I tried something new with folders this year, and realized that it would be best for students to bring their folders to school every day-that way they can show off their work and I can communicate with you easier. An important note in the yellow folders is that we will be going on a field trip on Friday October 8th to the Klackle Apple Orchard. See our News Letter section on our website for more information.
Monday: We begin our apple orchard ecosystem unit and learn about Johnny Appleseed. We sequence a Johnny Appleseed set of illustrations, which is good practice for sequencing stories.
Tuesday: We begin singing "I'm bringing home a baby bumble bee" and make a bumble bee craft out of toilet paper rolls (thank you for donating!) we learn how bees help pollinate apple blossoms and make honey. With out bees, our fruit wouldn't produce.
Wednesday: We will watch a few video clips to learn about bees lives. We will also make five petal apple blossoms out of cupcake wrappers.
Thursday: We will visit Ms. Holly/Mr. Shawn for our first environmental education class-we will probably learn more about Monarchs, bees, and the ecosystems at school (last week was canceled)
Friday: We will visit the garden ecosystems of school and review how bees help pollinate the flowers of the fruits. Don't forget Show and tell.

Tuesday: We had a character education assembly to kick off this month's theme- Respect! Our students will have the opportunity to earn Respect tickets, which will be drawn for in class rewards like reading in the teacher's chair or special center time. At the end of the month one student will be acknowledged in our class and at an assembly for being the hero of the character trait. They will receive an award and get to eat a pizza lunch with Mr. Hahn!
Wednesday: We have a lower elementary Dibels testing day. Students were pulled out of the classroom to have a one on one assessment. This is only one assessment and I will not rate our students solely on this test. I also have tested their letter and sound recognition using the MLPP program and will be assessing their math skills over the next week as well. I am very impressed with this class this year-we have a smart bunch! You will be able to see your student's scores during parent teacher conferences, or you can see me. I may be sending home some information as well-check the Friday Yellow Folder.
We also visited the Prairie ecosystem, found Milkweed pods and spread the seeds to help feed the Monarch Butterflies!
Thursday: We will visit Ms. Holly/Mr. Shawn for our first environmental education class-we will probably learn more about Monarchs and the ecosystems at school.
Friday: We will tour the ecosystems of school. Don't forget Show and tell. Look out for Grandparents day paper flower vases your child made to honor Grandparents.
*Picture Day is Next Monday! Students do not need to wear their uniforms, but dress their school appropraite best.
